SEO Fraud – What to Watch For
A note from Copy For Sale owner: Eric Engel
In case any newbies are reading this- SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the process of making your webpage more friendly to search engines. It starts with deciding which words or phrases (keywords) people might type into a search engine, and then designing your webpage around those keywords. The object of SEO is to have your website listed within the first two pages of the search engine results when someone searches your keywords. The object of this article is to inform you of some of the SEO fraud that I see everywhere.

Easy Ways To Detect SEO Fraud
SEO fraud is obvious when they guarantee rankings. No one can guarantee rankings. Some people are better at SEO than others, but no one has direct control over how search engines rank (unless you want to pay for top listing)
SEO starts with finding the right keywords. This takes time and research. If the SEO firm asks you to come up with some keywords, you should find someone else, because they’re asking you to do their job for them. Copy For Sale can do keyword research to find the most suitable phrase, but it takes time, and that costs money. We charge twenty five dollars to find keyword phrases for one page.
Half of SEO is content. If you want a higher ranking, you need content that people want to read. If your SEO firm doesn’t provide this, and they won’t find the proper keywords, they really aren’t SEOs.
SEO is an ongoing process. No one can SEO your website within a month, and expect it to receive high rankings. Google’s latest trick (according to the latest theories) is to keep track of a website’s history. They look at how the content changes over time and assign ranking only when they see a website that is always up to date. This is why it’s important to keep fresh, original articles circulating on your domain. Some SEO fraud involves a onetime fee to update a site and submit it to search engines. Don’t be fooled. High ranking isn’t easy, and one time fees are a waste of money unless you or the SEO company plan to make weekly changes.
SEO means nothing without sales. It’s the number one SEO fraud line of all time. “more traffic means more sales.” As mentioned in another article, high ranking isn’t everything. If you get all the traffic in the world, it doesn’t help unless the traffic starts buying. Don’t trade optimization for clean copy. Check out a SEO’s portfolio before spending money. If their sites don’t invite people to buy, neither will yours.
Why Copy For Sale Isn’t an SEO Firm
Copy For Sale is a copywriting firm. We write content. Yes, we can and do write optimized content. Yes, we sometimes provide other SEO services like keyword research. But it takes more than content to optimize an entire web site, and ignoring any one of the SEO details can mean zero rank. And careful attention to every detail can still produce zero rank. So while we sometimes work with SEO projects, our focus is on communication. Sometimes that includes providing optimized content…but never at the expense of readable copy.
